Sacramento Chapter News - November, 2005

In this newsletter:
• Katrina victims need our help, Thetans!
• Other chapter news and doings...

As I’m sure I don’t have to tell you, some of our Gulf Coast states were devastated a few months ago by Hurricane Katrina. Although the news cameras have long since gone, the human tragedy continues, and THEY NEED OUR HELP!!! PLT, Sacramento has a plan for doing just that—

We’ve partnered with The Sunrise Shopping Mall here in Sacramento, and have set ourselves a goal of shipping $2,500 worth of school supplies to two deserving schools in D’Iberville, MS! To date, our local chapter has pledged $200, in addition to donations already received, and has requested a donation from Region V and other regional chapters.

Here's what we need from you:
Money. Please be as generous as you can. Checks and money orders are preferred. Please make them payable to: PLT Sacramento (A single check will be made out to the schools by the chapter.)

Books. Elementary- and Middle School-appropriate books. Books can be purchased at a 20% discount at “Your Creative Classroom” (YCC), a Thetan-owned enterprise. Visit them online at: yourcreativeclassroom.com

Materials. Use your imagination and experience here. What would a classroom teacher who’s had ALL of his or her materials destroyed need? Again, YCC’s Rachel Wallace has pledged to support our efforts by offering a 20% discount on all Relief-related purchases.

Anything else you would like to donate. Please keep in mind that these people have lost EVERYTHING! Anything you can offer we’re sure would be GREATLY appreciated. How to get your donations to us. You can either:
1. Mail checks and locally-purchased donation to our chapter treasurer’s attention, to:
Mrs. Toni Raney
112 Briarcliff Drive
Folsom, CA 95630
or
2. Request that Rachel forward your YCC purchases (there’s no extra cost) to Toni.

Deadline. Donations are due no later than December 5, 2005. This will allow us to get the material loaded on Sunrise Mall’s van that will be heading east December 12.

OTHER CHAPTER NEWS AND DOINGS…

Volunteerism and Giving are proud American traditions.

We have some volunteer opportunities, and would like to enlist your time and talents in helping us give back to our communities.

After-School Tutors. PLT, Sacramento has partnered with The New St. Bethel Baptist Church After-School Program to provide tutors for their enrichment opportunities for at-risk, K-6 students in the Oak Park community here in Sacramento. Currently, the program operates only on Thursdays, from 3-6 p.m., but they’re hoping to expand as resources become available. Please contact Marjorie Beazer at (916) 688-8468 for more information.

Helping the homeless-Holiday Meal Service. For those of you who have an hour or so to pitch in, PLT, Sacramento once again plans on reaching out to those in our community who are in need. This year, we plan on helping the Sacramento-based “Loaves & Fishes” (L&F) offer up a hot-n-hearty Christmas dinner. Details are developing as we speak. For more information, please contact Mrs. Toni Raney at: tmspano68@aol.com.

Another project that we’re working on that will benefit those coming through L&F’s doors each day is library books. We are currently accepting books for all grade levels for L&F’s “Mustard Seed School,” an education project a place where “…disconnected [homeless] children can find hope for their lives.”

THIS-N-THAT…

Scholarships are currently available, with deadlines looming as early as January 2006. Among them are: Janyce Yoshizawa Excellence in Classroom Teaching, Excellence in Education, Nadeen Burkeholder Williams Music Scholarships, and Student Support Scholarships.
